Celebrating Highly Sensitive Children

As a child I often struggled to reconcile the world around me that was ‘socially acceptable’ with the vibrant, diverse, far more interesting spiritual and emotional climate I was able to ‘read’.  Most of the time, it was very confusing.  What people said with their words in comparison with what their spirits or emotional resonance said, did not often align. It took several years to effectively construct energetic shields to stop being overwhelmed by the opposing messages.

Many children who are being born at this time are extremely ‘awake’.  You can tell as they look at you from their large luminous eyes, that not only are they seeing the body and face you are wearing, but also the emotional, spiritual and mental climate you are carrying.

Each person has an aura that extends several meters beyond their bodies.  People are conditioned to curl their energetic bodies more closely around their physical bodies as a coping mechanism early on in life.  It makes interactions with others emotions and spirits less overwhelming.  Ideally, through fostering meditation, yoga or reverence for the divine in another way such as communion with nature, people are given an opportunity to spread their wings of light, so to speak, to expand and trust their inner knowing and clear their energy fields so that interacting with others becomes a celebration of mirrored resonance and a joyful experience of others gifts.

One of the ways to respect and foster a child’s ‘sixth sense‘ is to be honest with them.  All of the time.  If you as a parent have words that are resonating in the same way as your emotional and spiritual body, then the child knows that they can trust you.  This certainly can lead to uncomfortable conversations, because there are days in which being honest with oneself also requires time for grief, healing, releasing and transforming anger, and the days can seem packed with other tasks and responsibilities.  Yet processing and acknowledging emotions is one of the most valuable gifts of mentorship you can offer a highly sensitive child.  Their emotions are like tidal waves.  You will see them rush through and seem to consume them.

Attempting to remain calm, to visualize surrounding them with white light and praying that their guardian angels help them to release and transform the emotion is all valuable.  Teaching them to breath through the emotion, to hold them against you if they wish to be held and taking deep, belly filling breaths also enables their rhythms to return to a  calmer place.

Sensitive and ‘awake’ children feel very deeply, not only their own emotions, but also the emotional climate of those they have interacted with though out the day.   A large crowded room, or an upset person they walked past can all flood them with emotions and energy they want to process. If your highly sensitive child prefers alone time, do not fear that they will be antisocial.  Consider that as they develop healthy boundaries and shielding techniques, they will attract other peoples energies that do not overwhelm them. I was far more comfortable alone, and sometimes still am, until I became more grounded in developing healthy boundaries and shielding techniques.  To share a simple few, consider the space that you child sleeps in.  Flood it with sunlight, encourage them to find rocks, outside that they are drawn to and bring them inside.  Many children will respond to the grounding energy of stones, and naturally want to collect them.  I am grateful still to my father for carrying backpacks of rocks home for me to array in my room.

Listen to the cultures or countries they are most fascinated by, and consider an image or piece of clothing from that country, as some of their past lives share gifts they wish to communicate in this present one. Perhaps they have recently had a lifetime in Tibet and are drawn to singing bowls.  This is a valuable energy clearing tool for them, in a similar way that sweet grass or sage for smudging can be used for clearing.

Allow them to dictate the colors they wear each day.  They will often adorn themselves like a rainbow and have very distinct ideas about what they want to wear.  Color has resonance, it mirrors and supports healthy chakras as well as matching their auras.  They will use these colors in healthy ways for creating balanced boundaries. Notice their response to drinking pure water.  Many will be highly sensitive chlorine and need filtered water, or when having a bath, a handful of sea salt to clear their energy.

Above all, listen to what they say, and what they ask you.  If they are curious about angels, or talk to them all the time, encourage their sharing of their inner knowing.  They may interact with a world that does not as easily accept this form of dialogue when they are outside the house, but if they feel safe expressing their gifts with you, they will be encouraged to hold onto them instead of trying to block them and ‘fit in’.

Trust their instincts about people they do not trust, and instead of talking them out of their thoughts, explore and communicate ways in which they can navigate uncomfortable situations with peers. This is challenging, but vital.  As you develop their tools, you will clarify and strengthen your own.  Highly sensitive children often pick highly sensitive parents.  They inspire growth, healing, divine love and colorful existence. They bring joy, when they are not struggling to ‘fit in’.

These children ‘know’ there is a God, angels,  fairies and plant devas, and that the earth and environment are precious.  They are teachers of us all, and if we remind them daily, that they are loved, and trusted, they will flourish and change the world as we know it in incredible ways.

As a child I to talked to angels and fairies and the earth.  I had a few years during which I attempted not to, to feel as if I ‘belonged’. Those were sad years.  I converse with the angels, fairies, and the earth daily once more.  Their messages are uplifting, energizing and filled with love. When I interact with people I want to tell them they are beautiful, bright, and worthy of love, because most of the time, their angels are all shouting it, and I am encouraged to join the chorus. I am grateful now for my heightened sensitivities and hope to mentor my own child to trust her inner knowing and gifts.

Many highly sensitive people learn to block out their spiritual awareness at a young age as a coping and survival skill.  The inner knowing however, is their greatest tool and ultimate survival and coping mechanism, and it is important to encourage a connection, foster self awareness and trust and endeavor to support these gifts, as ultimately they are Soul gifts that the person has brought to the planet.

The following is a prayer with the assistance of Archangels Michael the angel of protection, Raphael the angel of healing, and Ariel who is the ‘lioness of god’ or the brilliant gold light that infuses and balances the third chakra and our personal place of power and assertiveness:

Dear God/dess, and higher self, please help me to align my being with its unique and brilliant gifts.  Please help me to trust my inner knowing, to set and maintain healthy boundaries that enable me to celebrate my gifts, and interact with others in a manner that encourages their own healthily boundaries and inner truth. Please send Archangel Micheal with his sword to cut any chords of fear or negative energy from my personal space and being (and from around my child).  Please send Archangel Raphael to bring healing to any areas in my life, past and present that taught me to ignore my inner knowing. Please help me to have faith in my ability to perceive divine love on all levels, both within myself and within those that I interact with, and send Archangel Ariel to help me to have the courage to speak my truth from a place of love and assertiveness. Thank you , amen, and Om”.

To all of the parents of such children, and the adults that were once these children themselves, the light within me, recognizes, honors and celebrates the light within all of you, Namaste.

A Warrior’s Breath

I had a spiritual teacher who once suggested we listen to our voices, take note and then take four deep powerful breathes and listen to the same words once more. When I try this exercise I am astonished by how much deeper my voice sounds after the larger breathes.  It is as if, the space in my body, the expansion of my lungs, has released a more powerful version of who I am, and allowed my actual voice to speak my truth.

Sometimes in western culture, we forget to really Breathe.  Our physical bodies need oxygen to function, but our etheric bodies, our emotional and mental ones as well, are all deeply connected to our Breath. In a state of anxiety or panic, people often take short, shallow, and rapid breathes.  In deepest relaxation, the gentle rise and fall of their diaphragms is like the deep rolling waves of the ocean.  To breathe with intention for ones greatest sense of well being and balance, is to remember, that no matter how overwhelming life may seem, there is always enough time to Breathe.   In the spirit of encouraging you to speak your truth, with confidence and power, I am delighted to share  a breathing technique with you.

The Three Part Belly Breath is an introduction to deeper breathing.  It can be done at any time, anywhere, while sitting, walking or laying on your back.  My favorite variation is with a combination of yogic instruction and ‘energy awareness’.

*First interlace your fingers, and place your palms across your stomach.  By interlacing your fingers, palms facing down, you have just blocked all other energy beyond your own personal resonance from your aura.  Enjoy this sensation and take a few normal breaths while you ground into an awareness of your physical body and self.

*Next close your eyes and visualize the pathway your inhale follows, attribute a color that resonates with you to the air, such as soft gold, or healing green, strong blue, or loving pink.  Notice how the breath flows through your navel cavities and down your throat expanding your lungs.  On your next breath, imagine the color flowing deeper, expanding your belly, and pressing outwards at your palms. Your exhalation follows the same path, up from your stomach, resonating through your lungs, up through your throat and out through your nostrils.

*It may take two or three inhalations before you are able to draw the breath all the way into your belly.  Note the feeling of space and expansion as your throat, heart center, and stomach all begin to create greater space for breathe.

*When you feel that the air is saturating your being, a slight dizziness may temporarily occur, at which point it is best to be sitting.  Take another eight breaths.  When you are ready to open your eyes, it is a good time to chant a mantra, of your own making, a personal affirmation, a prayer, or a spontaneous sound of joy or release.

*Unlacing your fingers, gently place your palms face down, if you would like to feel a greater sense of grounding, or hold them face up, if you wish to receive energy from the universe, your higher self or angels.

Most importantly, return to this deeper breathing throughout the day, when commuting, working, sitting quietly and contemplating life, or in the moments before sleep, give yourself the gift of deeper breathing.

Be loud in your breath, like the wind moving through the trees, be powerful in your fueling of your body and Self, and carry that energy into your waking life as the prana-fuel for your expression of your own unique gifts and truth.
